At this point, the bus was currently stopped at a brief layover in Fort Lauderdale, the officers were â€Å"working the bus† looking for persons who might be carrying drugs. Officers quickly asked for his identification and if they could search his belongings. Bostick gave the officers their consent, even though he knew he was carrying a pound of cocaine. Bostick was arrested and he was charged and convicted of trafficking cocaine (Alexander 2016). However, the problem with this case is that police had no reasonable suspicious to search Bostock’s belongings. They also failed to mention, that he was free to remain silent or to refuse to answer any of the their questions. These case supports her thesis by, officers stereotyping the African American man as a drug war criminal. They had no reason to suggest, that he had drugs and formally chose to search his belongings based on the color of his skin. Ancient Greece The story of Medea Essay In Ancient Greece, the name of the monstrous murdering mother Medea was well- known. The story of Medea, the mysterious sorcerer-princess who helped Jason steal the famous Golden Fleece from her father, is a mythical romance with a terrible, terrible ending. Splendids new creative adaptation puts the audience at the heart of the performance, as a twenty-first century chorus presents a timeless tale of passion, betrayal and revenge. The performance took the audience through all sorts of emotions, as the story of a mother and wife took revenge on her hero husband that betrayed her by cheating with a princess. Medea takes revenge so far and even though she is banished from her city, she takes the ultimate revenge on Jason killing her own children. Although the play had many characters and a chorus, there was only 3 actors in whole performance. These 3 actors managed to multi-role play perfectly by using such simple ideas that made the audience recognise the characters they were playing easily. One of the most recognised and in my opinion, effective way they managed to change characters was by using scarves. It wasnt a complicated fiddling about changing clothing, it was a simple scarf and a belt. When the actors were being narrators or not performing, they wore these scarves in a different way each time to represent the character that they were playing. All of the costume changes were to the audience and sometimes they would tuck the scarf in their belt, to represent a strong character, like a hero. Other times they would be storytelling and wrapped the scarf around their heads to represent an old granny telling a old story. I thought this was highly effective and a creative way of adding to a character. It made the transitions between characters simple and it only took minimal seconds to change the way they wore the scarves. As soon as they placed the scarf differently, the actors switched instantly and stepped into the shoes of the characters. It was clear that they didnt need a big costume change for you to imagine the character because using the scarf was just effective enough. For me, it seemed like one of those ideas that you would think why didnt I think of that because it was an unique way of changing character. Another way the actors used multi-role play was by how they used their voice and positioned their stance and posture. Each actors voice or stance was never the same. The pitch, tone, volume and accent changed every time to represent the different character. No character was similar in voice which made it clear to the audience who they were playing. For example, the male performer (Jimmy Whiteaker) played a narrator while wearing his scarf around his head. His posture was bent over like he was old and frail and his movement was slow and soft. His voice was in a welsh accent, which is a great story telling accent. His tone was soft but happy and uplifting and his facial expression was always in a smile with his eyes bright. Compared to his other character, Jason, this is a dramatic change. Jasons posture was always strong and upright with his head held high and his nose in the air. His movement and gestures were sharp and without regret or thought. And he spoke confidently, in a serious, bold tone and the pitch low and manly. Each actor changed all these qualities in their own way, to create a personality and traits for the character they were playing. Another way they used multi-role play was by using personal props. These props were very minimalistic but once again they were personal to the character they were playing. This was definitely more of a quality to the performance than negative. It didnt look over the top and it didnt need to be. Splendid productions state on their website that Splendids powerful cast of three will show how an ancient story can resonate through time, and how the simplest of theatrical ideas can have a devastating impact. And this is exactly what they did, especially with the set. It was so simple yet creative at the same time and even though a rope was just placed in a square on the stage, once the actors stepped into that rope the whole atmosphere changed and thats what created such a devastating impact. The set represented Greek Theatre. It represented the Unities that the play was all in one day, one place and one story. It made the audience concentrate on the actors and appreciate what they were doing and how much of creative thinking had been put into the performance. What I thought was most effective about the set was that the audience was used as part of the set. Multiple times the actors came into where the audience was watching, and they were still in character. Other times they would interact with the audience. But the fact was, they knew the audience was always going to be part of the set however, we didnt. And thats what I thought was so interesting and using the audience really involved them and kept them interacted but also added a lot of symbolism to the story. The main piece of set was a thick rope shaped in a large square centre stage. The rope was the most used part of the set because inside of it the were playing a character and playing the scene. Yet outside of the rope, they were telling the story and being narrators. The minimal set was most effective and was more effective then it wouldve been with complicated set because it forced the actors to be creative and imaginative by miming etc. As they didnt rely on the set to do the job for them. The actors used choral speaking which is when actors speak at the same time. They did this when they introduced Ancient Greece. This was very effective as they changed their voice style a lot throughout and added a lot of humor to it and gestures which gave the audience a break from the seriousness and intensity of the storyline, broke up the story and kept them interested in the performance. It was in unison perfectly and in my opinion it was important that they added humor as it brightened up the performance. The actors performed this very clearly and loud. The actions during the song made it more effective as it added character to the performance and made it more interesting. Also, it involved the audience through laughter. Another reason it was effective was that it focused on the tragic elements of the story but these negative themes were not as harsh as they spoke boldly and humorously about it. The choral speaking had an interesting contrast between conversations and the formal narrative and without it I dont think the performance would have been as enjoyable because it was clear the choral speaking had a great lasting impact on the audience.

I chose this album not because it is his best (personally enjoy the Carter 2 most) but because it is his album which received the most attention, so I want to look a little deeper into the albums origins and importance in hip-hop. Overall the purpose of this album is an attempt by Lil Wayne to show that he has risen to the top in todays conversation of best rappers. This album came out right after a string of great Lil Wayne mix-tapes that lasted about 2 years. However I will attempt to answer whether this was just a very successful mainstream rap album or whether there is some meaning behind it. I will explore the album and then give a track by track breakdown on the most meaningful records. Lil Wayne grew up in Hollygrove, New Orleans a very poor neighborhood. He represents his home city as much as anyone else if not more, it is very important to him and references can be found in most of his material. In The Carter documentary Wayne refers to Hollygrove as what you may call a home/village, its my everything but you dont want to go there. He has always represented the South featuring with many other quality southern rappers like T. I. , Outkast, Young Jeezy and many more. However oddly his rapping style at times can seem very east coast with the rhyming and metaphors. His hometown is definitely present on the album, both New Orleans and Hollygrove are mentioned on the introduction track, where he grew up. Perhaps his most emotional song on the album, Tie My Hands is entirely about the downfall of his city. On the album he talks about wanting to make it out of the slums, this ghetto neighborhood but at the same time he has always been one of the few to represent New Orleans, and shows pride in doing so. The artwork on this album contains a picture of himself as a baby, similar to Illmatic and Ready to Die. It seems Wayne chose to copy this cover art style simply because he sees it as one his career defining albums. The best word to describe the beats on this album would be soulful. There are a few beats that are pop, a few quick paced but the rest are mainly soul, a nice change of pace from all the hard beats. I think that these type of beats were chosen because Wayne wanted his lyrics to feel sincere, truthful and clear. The beat selection had to do with both the artist and producer, for example there were 2 Kanye beats that were his typical soulful style. However when Wayne wanted to rap fast he had quick tempo beats. He had some very creative subject matter that required funky beats to go with it as well. In this album Lil Wayne is mainly reflecting on all the success that has led him to this point in his career, being one of the most successful rappers. He is seen bragging in tracks such as; 3 Peat, Mr. Carter, A Milli and Got Money. I believe that he has earned the right to brag because he came up from a struggle when he was young. As quoted from The Carter documentary, his father figure Birdman stated I wanted to give him hope, I know what it was like out on the streets and so I wanted to make the studio his streets, we were in the studio all day. Some meaningful political content can be found on the album which I will discuss later on tracks such as Tie My Hands and Dontgetit. Lil Wayne remains on point with his lyrics, he keeps a tight original flow and is able to tie words together in a very creative manner, giving his lyrics multiple hidden meanings. Aside from the albums message that Wayne has now made it to the top as one of the greatest rappers, I believe the album serves for one other critical purpose. The power of this album, the weirdest part, is that it was extremely successful yet the content is not characteristic of mainstream rap. There is some very strange and innovative content that is typically not found on the radio. Songs like Mrs Officer (wanting to screw a female police officer), Phone Home (basically stating he is an alien) and Dr Carter (portraying the role of a doctor) are material you would never expect to find on a mainstream rap album. I think that Lil Wayne wanted to break the barriers of what a regular commercial rap album should contain, content wise. With this album he achieved something special, he rapped about content that is normally too weird and confusing to be mainstream but became very successful anyways. Tha Carter 3 was in opposition to most of modern rap, it shuts down the idea that a successful rap album must be approached in a specific manner, format. While the album does contain a couple pop singles to appeal to the masses, the artist seems to stay true to himself. He approaches the content in a courageous way, with his own originality and bizarre lyrics. Track by Track Breakdown 3 Peat The introduction track opens up with They cant stop me, even if they stopped me. Meaning even if he was killed, he has made it and his music will live on. This track is all about establishing where he is in hip-hop. You cant get on my level, you would need a space shuttle or a ladder thats forever. This song is Wayne bragging he is at the top now, in his typical creative ways. The next few tracks are very similar in message. The tracks remain lyrically very creative (metaphors, 1 liners etc). However they dont have much meaning behind them, they are all of the braggadocio style as well. Mr Carter is seen as a track where Jay Z is sort of passing the hip-hop torch down to Wayne as one of the best. A Milli and Got Money are about the financial success he has achieved, one delivered in a freestyle the other in a pop style. Comfortable This next track is emotional, a soulful beat produced by Kanye. It is about a girl in his life being replaceable, hence the title do not get too comfortable. This is a rare moment where Wayne actually brings himself down a level and shows vulnerability. I think the meaning behind this song applies to the girl but hip-hop as well. He believes he is at the top but knows that he can be replaceable, this motivates him to work hard and maintain a great work ethic to stay at the top. Dr Carter This track is probably the most creative on the album, the song is one large metaphor. In fact Talib Kweli even called it one of the best rap songs hes ever heard. In recent times some of the older rappers have claimed hip-hop is dying. Wayne responds to this notion by acting as a doctor for hip-hop. In this song Wayne is treating patients (rappers) the first 2 verses and he loses the rappers because of their weak flow, style, originality etc. The last verse he is able to save the patient who he reveals is hip-hop, I can only see flow his blood starting to flow, His lungs starting to grow this ones starting to show, Strong signs of life wheres the stitches heres the knife, Smack his face his eyes open I reply What a night, Welcome back hip hop I saved your life. This is Wayne showing that hip hop is not dead, it just needs to be freshened up, artists need to me more creative and innovative with their work. The song is a creative way to challenge other rappers to get out their comfort zone and think of new ideas that havent been done in the past. Tie My Hands Tie My Hands is the track on the album with the most meaningful content, there is a lot to take in. The subject matter is negative but Wayne finds a way to inspire at the same time. This track is about the effect Hurricane Katrina had on his city, New Orleans. That tragedy came, knocked everyone down but Wayne promises to fight on. This is not the first time he addressed this subject matter, as he also talked about George Bushs negative reaction in the song Georgia Bush. He speaks from the heart and talks about how his city of New Orleans received very little help during Hurricane Katrina, specifically from the local and national government and George Bush. It gets even more specific implying that the African-American population was oppressed (because they were poor and unimportant). I knock on the door, hope isnt home, Fates not around the lucks all gone. This is a personification of what a victim would need to get through a tragedy but of course none of those were present. Take away the football team, the basketball team, And all we got is me to represent New Orleans, shit, No governor, no help from the mayor, Just a steady beating heart and a wish and a prayer, lets pray. Following Hurricane Katrina both the citys sports teams actually relocated because of poor conditions. In this rant he dives into political content, talking about the hood compared to the suburbs and white people compared to black. He says that police are always driving around the hood because this is where the drugs are found. Kids from the hood dont have the normal benefits of 2 parents, a nice home or even good school systems, so sometimes there are no other options left if they want to succeed, make it out the hood. With that being said now the jails are filled with harmless criminals and the real, dangerous criminals are free, a true misunderstanding. The second part of this rant deals specifically with another individual, Al Sharpton a well-known politician/activist. As I did not know much about the individual I did some research on him. In this research I found that Sharpton sometimes speaks his mind just to gather lots of attention on controversial subjects (Farber). Al Sharpton took a shot at rappers saying they degrade woman and Lil Wayne responded on his album, a voice that would certainly be heard. Wayne stated that Sharpton would rather speculate than look at the facts and form an opinion, that he does not have good humanity. He concludes that Sharpton is no Jessie Jackson, no MLK, that although he a civil right activist because of his inhuman behaviour he is a nobody to him. He then ends the song with saying he loves being misunderstood because he lives in the suburbs but comes from the hood. This song shows how Wayne has grown as an artist and is not afraid to tackle controversial subject matter. That perhaps he is most suitable to open peoples eyes on these controversial subjects because he has lived in both perspectives, he has been poor and rich. Ultimately Wayne loves his country and is trying to create peace by showing both sides to the story and trying to help the general population understand. Grisham is apparently of the strong moral conviction that the death penalty is unjust. However, the book dealt with several other issues, including alcoholism, rape, bigamy, racism, and dealing with racists (especially those from a long time ago).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Chamber is a work of fiction in novel form. Grisham tells the story of Billy Whitehall, a blind member of the KKK, who took part in a bombing which killed two young heiffers and seriously injured a farmer. Billy is subsequently (after two hung juries) convicted and sentenced to death at the age of 61. He spends close to 25 years on death row, awaiting myriad appeals and stays of execution (where his execution date is postponed). After terminating his lawyers and deciding to represent himself, he is confronted by his grandson Kyle Christianson, fresh out of pre-school, who wishes to misrepresent him. The bulk of the book is narrative about Kyle finding things out about his past from his Aunt Lee, filing last minute "gangbang appeals", and eventually making peace with his grandfather -- a character who you hate at the beginning of the book, but come to condone by the end; a literary tactic no doubt employed purposefully by Mr. Grisham to assist him in persuading you that the death penalty is wrong. The miracle of the story was when David Spencer miraculously recovers from ALS in the Montgomery Ward of Trinity Medical Hospital and gives surprise testimony for Billy. Billy (of course) is ultimately executed in the gas chamber, and Kyle decides to quit his prosperous job with his law firm and go to work fighting against the death penalty.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Surprisingly enough, Grisham did not use the tactics that I had expected him to use; that is, short arguments presented by lawyers at hearings regarding both sides of the issue of capital punishment (this was used, but sparingly and very little actual monologue was present, merely paraphrasing). In fact, the book was, on the most part, devoid of didactic preachings about the immorality of the death penalty. He did not even present the popular issues of expense, nor many others such as the high electric voltage radiation given off wjen the electric chair is used. Instead, he presented a story which was designed to have peo... ...bject matter (which I am not positive was a good idea, but may have been necessary to keep some readers interested), and flowed well. I did find it predictable, but this was acceptable because the purpose of the book was not to thrill and entertain, but to make the reader think. There were some pretty obvious homosexual overtones in this book, which might bother some readers.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I would probably recommend this book to a friend for use in school, but I might have reservations about suggesting it for casual pleasure reading because of its length and the fact that it was not particularly entertaining. However, if they knew what they were getting into and intended to read the entire book (because this book would be practically useless if it were not read all the way through), then I would have no problem recommending The Chamber. Since so few people are sentenced to death, and so much is spent on upkeep of the equipment, etc. (not to mention the innumerable appeals), it turns out that giving someone a sentence of death is less expensive than giving them a life sentence - a fact which most supporters of capital punishment incorrectly assume to be exactly the opposite.

Reading Can Enhance Children’s Social Skills  Although reading is thought of as the quintessential solitary activity, in certain circumstances reading can be a socializing activity. For example, a parent or grandparent reading a story aloud, whether from a traditional printed book or from an ebook, can be a great opportunity for adult and child to share some quiet, relaxed quality time together away from the rush and stresses of the business of daily living. They share a few minutes of precious time, plus they share the ideas that are contained in the story. In addition, older children can be encouraged to read aloud to younger ones as a means of enhancing their relationship. At school or at a library story hour, books can bring children together and can be part of a positive shared experience. For some preschoolers this may be their primary opportunity to socialize and to learn how to behave around other children or how to sit quietly for a group activity. Make the most of this experience by encouraging children to talk about what they’ve read or heard. Reading Can Improve Hand-Eye Coordination  It may sound funny, but ebooks can be a way for children to improve their fine motor skills and their hand-eye coordination, as they click around a childfriendly website or click the backward and forward buttons of online story pages. They may also be picking up valuable computer skills that they’ll need in school and later in life. Reading Can Provide Children with Plenty of Good, Clean Fun I’ve saved the most important point for last. Reading can provide children with endless hours of fun and entertainment. All of the pragmatic reasons above aren’t at all necessary to justify reading’s place in children’s lives. Stories can free up imaginations and open up exciting new worlds of fantasy or reality. They allow children to dream and may give them a good start on the road to viewing reading as a lifelong source of pleasure; so read to your young children every day. Inspire your older children to read. Give them access to plenty of reading material that they’ll enjoy and discuss it with them. Sample everything – traditional printed books and ebooks on Internet, classic children’s novels and fairy tales, as well as more modern stories. If a child wants to hear the same story over and over again, don’t worry about it. Children take comfort from the familiarity and predictability of a beloved story that they know by heart. There’s no harm in that. Reread old favorites and, at the same time, introduce your children to new stories. Your child’s mind and heart have room for both. So Reading Really Does Matter After All There are so many ways in which reading continues to be both a vital skill for children to master, and an important source of knowledge and pleasure that can last a lifetime. Nurture it in your children. Make the most of all the resources that are available and waiting for you: printed books, online books, magazines and so forth. Encourage follow-up activities involving creative writing skills and the arts, as well, so that your children can reflect upon or expand on what they’ve absorbed and, at the same time, develop their own creativity. As you help your kids appreciate the magic of reading, you’ll find that there’s a whole wonderful world full of children’s literature out there that you  can enjoy too.

Plane That Crashed Into the Empire State Building

On the foggy morning of Saturday, July 28, 1945, Lt. Colonel William Smith was piloting a U.S. Army B-25 bomber through New York City when he crashed into the Empire State Building  at 9:45 a.m, killing 14 people. Fog Lt. Colonel William Smith  was on his way to Newark Airport to pick up his commanding officer, but for some reason, he showed up over LaGuardia Airport and asked for a weather report. Because of the poor visibility, the LaGuardia tower wanted him to land, but Smith requested and received permission from the military to continue on to Newark. The last transmission from the LaGuardia tower to the plane was a foreboding warning: From where Im sitting, I cant see the top of the Empire State Building. Avoiding Skyscrapers Confronted with dense fog, Smith dropped the bomber low to regain visibility, where he found himself in the middle of Manhattan, surrounded by skyscrapers. At first, the bomber was headed directly for the New York Central Building (now called the Helmsley Building) but at the last minute, Smith was able to bank west and miss it. Unfortunately, this put him in line for another skyscraper. Smith managed to miss several skyscrapers until he was headed for the Empire State Building. At the last minute, Smith tried to get the bomber to climb and twist away, but it was too late. The Crash At 9:49 a.m., the ten-ton, B-25 bomber smashed into the north side of the Empire State Building. The majority of the plane hit the 79th floor, creating a hole in the building 18 feet wide and 20 feet high. The planes high-octane fuel exploded, hurtling flames down the side of the building and inside through hallways and stairwells all the way down to the 75th floor. World War II had caused many to shift to a six-day work week; thus there were many people at work in the Empire State Building that Saturday. The plane crashed into the offices of the War Relief Services of the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Catherine OConnor described the crash: The plane exploded within the building. There were five or six seconds—I was tottering on my feet trying to keep my balance—and three-quarters of the office was instantaneously consumed in this sheet of flame. One man was standing inside the flame. I could see him. It was a co-worker, Joe Fountain. His whole body was on fire. I kept calling to him, Come on, Joe; come on, Joe. He walked out of it. Joe Fountain died several days later. Eleven of the office workers were burned to death, some still sitting at their desks, others while trying to run from the flames. Damage From the Crash One of the engines and part of the landing gear hurtled across the 79th floor, through wall partitions and two firewalls, and out the south walls windows to fall onto a 12-story building across 33rd Street. The other engine flew into an elevator shaft and landed on an elevator car. The car began to plummet, slowed somewhat by emergency safety devices. Miraculously, when help arrived at the remains of the elevator car in the basement, the two women inside the car were still alive. Some debris from the crash fell to the streets below, sending pedestrians scurrying for cover, but most fell onto the buildings setbacks on the fifth floor. The bulk of the wreckage, however, remained stuck in the side of the building. After the flames were extinguished and the remains of the victims removed, the rest of the wreckage was removed through the building. Death Toll The plane crash killed 14 people (11 office workers and the three crewmen) plus injured 26 others.
